2.1. Research Problem :

In African as well as western countries, diverse community responses are developing in the form of association mutual aid according to the awareness of the magnitude of the epidemic. In B. Faso, and elsewhere, there have been responses from people and this is what we propose to study. Since the beginning of the 1990s, we observe a multiplication of private initiatives working in the domain of AIDS. This has led the NCFA/CNLS in colloaboration with the NGO PP1 to estabilish a coordination structure for associations and NGOS helping in the fight against AIDS with the aim to harmonising the different interventions.

2.2. Objectives :
The different aspects to study concerning these association are :
1. Nature and expression of the intervention and awareness of the fight against AIDS: Are there any firms or parapublic organisations issuing from the population of B. Faso ? Who are those concerned ? Who originated the initiative and who took it ?
2. Structural aspects of the organisation: Is it formal or informal ? What are the means at the disposal of such organisations? What do they do concretely ?
3. Policy of the movements: what is the motivation of the different actors ? what is the level of their competency ? Nature of messages and ideology of the movements.
4.Social and political context restitution of the social context in which these structures work. What are their relationships with the other actors (NGOS, State, other non spontaneous associations) ?

2.3. Methods
The reseach will rely on interviews and sociological inquiries.

2.4. Geographical zone concerned
Ouagadougou,

2.5. Acquired Results
We have noticed that with an increase in the number of individuals and homes affected by the disease, social responses in the form of associations are being developed. Since the beginning of the 1990s we observe on one hand a blooming of associations which are wholly or almost devoting themselves to the fight against AIDS, and on the other hand associations or NGOs which initially had different objectives but which preoccupied by a situation they deem alarming, have integrated the fight against AIDS in their program of activities.
The newly spontaneous or self initiated associations working on AIDS in Ouagadougou sprang up thanks to the will of an individual or individuals desiring to invest in a social cause. Often, it is the awareness of the danger that the epidemic represents for the population or the personal experience of an individual for example the death of a relative, that serves as a driving power behind such initiatives. Religious ideology is not neutral in the effort of intervention. It is present in the nature of messages of prevention given duelling on fidelity, abstinence and sometimes chastity and calling on people to avoid using condoms for moral reasons.
These associations rapidly get confronted with the realities of the life of association especially regarding the organisation of their intervention on the field and the quest for the necessary financial support needed for their actions. Sponsors don't have confidence in these new associations for the reason that they lack experience in the field but possessing only one thing-their good-will. At the beginning, this situation forces these associations to organise themselves financially through sponsored field inquiries or research before getting a recognition from the authorities or experienced NGOS who may be ready to finance their activities.
We believe that in the coming years the associations which will not be discouraged but stay firm and pursue a regular program of activities will manage to build a durable partnership with the different structures helping with the fight against AIDS and Sponsors.
